Air filter replacement is the most cost-effective HVAC maintenance activity homeowners can perform — and one of the most commonly done incorrectly. Wrong-MERV filters, incorrect replacement frequency, and improperly-fitted filters produce measurable problems: reduced airflow that stresses the blower motor, elevated static pressure that reduces cooling capacity, bypassed filtration where air moves around gaps in the filter fitting rather than through the filter media, and shorter equipment service life. PolarCore’s approach to air filter replacement combines proper filter selection (matched to the HVAC system, ductwork, and IAQ goals), verified fit (no bypass gaps), static pressure measurement to confirm the filter isn’t restricting airflow beyond design limits, and replacement scheduling calibrated to actual filter loading (not calendar dates alone).
Captures large dust particles, some pollen and mold spores. Adequate for equipment protection (keeping large debris off the coil and blower motor) but limited IAQ benefit. Typical service life 1–3 months. Best for: rental properties, workshop or garage installations, applications prioritizing lowest filter cost.
Captures dust, pollen, mold spores, pet dander, some bacteria. Most residential HVAC systems ship with MERV 8 filters as standard; MERV 11 upgrades typically fit the same filter slot with modest static pressure increase. Best for: standard residential without specific IAQ concerns, homes with pets, homes with seasonal allergies. Typical service life 2–3 months (varies by household).
Captures most bacteria, some virus-carrying particles, fine particulates including wildfire smoke. ASHRAE-recommended for residential COVID-19-era ventilation improvements. Best for: homes with allergies, respiratory conditions, or health concerns; homes near air pollution sources or affected by wildfire smoke; general IAQ upgrade. Requires attention to static pressure impact — standard 1″ slots may not accommodate MERV 13 pleated media without upgrading to deep-pleat 4″ or 5″ cabinets. Typical service life 3–6 months in a dedicated cabinet.
Increasingly higher efficiency but proportional static pressure increases. Suitable primarily for dedicated 4″ or 5″ media cabinets on equipment with variable-speed ECM blowers that can compensate for higher pressure drop. Not appropriate for standard 1″ filter slots.
Filter slots on residential HVAC systems come in standard sizes: 1″ deep (most common), 4″ deep-pleat cabinet, 5″ deep-pleat cabinet. Filter dimensions (width x height) vary by equipment; nominal sizes include 16x25x1, 20x25x1, 16x25x4, 20x25x4, 16x25x5, 20x25x5, and more.
Limited filter surface area produces higher static pressure at higher MERV ratings. Realistic maximum: MERV 11 pleated media, or specific low-restriction MERV 13 pleated media that maintains reasonable static pressure. Change frequency: 1–3 months typical.
Substantially more filter surface area produces lower static pressure at any given MERV rating. Realistic range: MERV 11 through MERV 16 depending on equipment and blower capacity. Change frequency: 6–12 months typical, sometimes longer with light dust loading.
Static pressure across the air handler is a critical indicator of ductwork and filter capacity. PolarCore measures static pressure with a Testo 510 manometer during service visits. Target static pressure: typically 0.5″WC or lower across the full HVAC system. Elevated static pressure (above 0.8″WC) indicates filter restriction, dirty coil, blocked ductwork, or other airflow limitation and produces: reduced airflow to registers, cooling capacity reduction, blower motor stress and shortened service life, and comfort complaints.
When high static pressure is measured, PolarCore identifies the specific cause: filter loading (replace filter), coil fouling (clean coil), duct blockage (clear blockage), improper filter MERV selection (change filter type), or ductwork undersizing (major modification required). Static pressure measurement is included in every service visit and tune-up.
