UV-C light in the 254 nanometer wavelength range destroys the DNA of microorganisms it contacts, killing bacteria, viruses, mold, and biofilm on exposure. Effectiveness depends on:
The evaporator coil surface is wet during summer AC operation due to condensation. Wet surfaces in a warm airstream are ideal biological growth environments — mold, bacteria, and biofilm accumulate on the coil surface within months of operation. This biological growth reduces heat transfer efficiency (making the AC work harder), produces musty odors that circulate through the house, and can accelerate coil corrosion.
UV-C lamps mounted to shine directly on the coil surface (Fresh-Aire UV APCO, RGF Guardian Air REME HALO, Honeywell UV100 series) provide continuous sterilization that prevents biological growth from establishing. Well-designed UV-C coil installations show visibly cleaner coil surfaces during annual inspection compared to non-UV installations. Installation typically $385–$685 including UV-C lamp, ballast, and mounting kit; annual bulb replacement typically $85–$145.
Air handler drain pans collect condensate that can support biological growth. UV-C exposure to the drain pan surface reduces biofilm buildup and prevents drain line blockage.

UV-C lamps installed in the return duct or supply plenum have modest effect on airborne pathogens because air moves past the lamp quickly (typically less than 1 second exposure) and pathogens require longer exposure for reliable kill. Marketing claims of “99% viral reduction” from in-line UV-C installations typically don’t hold up in independent testing at realistic airflow rates. UV-C is better positioned as coil sterilization (long exposure time on stationary surface) than as air sterilization (short exposure time on moving airstream).
UV-C damages microorganisms but doesn’t remove particulates (dust, pollen, dander) or VOCs. Comprehensive IAQ requires filtration (MERV 11 or MERV 13 typical), humidity control (30–50% RH), and UV-C for biological growth on wet surfaces — not any one of these alone.
Standard UV-C at 254 nm doesn’t produce ozone. Some UV lamp products intentionally include ozone-producing wavelengths (185 nm) marketed as “advanced oxidation” or similar terms. Ozone at concentrations produced by these lamps can irritate respiratory conditions.
