Deep-pleated media filters mounted in dedicated cabinets (Aprilaire 2410/2412/2416 series, Honeywell FC100A series) provide efficient particulate removal from the entire HVAC airstream. MERV ratings scale from MERV 8 (standard 1″ filter, removes larger particulates) through MERV 16 (removes bacteria-size particles). MERV 11–13 covers most residential applications; MERV 13 is the sweet spot for allergen and viral particulate control without excessive static pressure penalty. PECO (Photo Electrochemical Oxidation) technology (Molekule) uses UV light activating a catalyst surface to break down VOCs and pathogens at the molecular level. Best evidence supports PECO for VOC destruction (not just adsorption). Whole-home PECO installations are less common than standalone room units due to limited industry adoption. Cost varies widely.
Ozone-generating devices (marketed for “fresh air smell”) produce ozone that is a known respiratory irritant at concentrations produced by these devices. The FDA, EPA, and California ARB all have advisory guidance against residential ozone generators. PolarCore does not install these devices regardless of marketing claims.
Some bipolar ionization products have been marketed with strong pathogen-reduction claims that have not held up in independent testing. Where genuine third-party validation exists for a specific product’s claims, PolarCore will discuss it. Absent that validation, the honest recommendation is proven technologies (media filtration, HEPA, activated carbon) that have decades of independent testing behind them.
Higher-MERV filtration increases pressure drop across the filter cabinet, which increases static pressure on the air handler blower. Excessive static pressure can: reduce airflow to registers, produce comfort complaints, stress the blower motor, and reduce equipment efficiency. Before installing MERV 13+ filtration, PolarCore measures existing static pressure with a Testo 510 manometer and calculates the pressure penalty of the new filter. If existing ductwork has limited capacity, options include: use of lower-restriction MERV 13 pleated media (specific product selection matters), duct modifications to reduce baseline restriction, or upgrade to ECM variable-speed blower that can compensate for higher static pressure.
